What is the temperature difference hiking the Narrows compared to the general park? Thanks|||As long as you're staying in the water, it is much cooler, but still warm. It is best to go early in the morining so you can hike as far as possible in the narrows. Bring water shoes or sandals, as it is very rocky. There are a few good "beaches" where you can eat your lunch and there are some good rocks for jumping into the river. It's a great hike. Also, be sure to go up Angel's Landing, you will not regret it. Zion is awesome.|||Go to the Zion Adventure Company website for detailed information about hiking the Narrows. I rented a hiking staff, Canyoneers (river boots) and a waterproof backpack from them for the hike. I did the hike (bottom up) in October as a compromise between crowds, heat (air temp) and water temp. It鈥檚 a super hike and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The river bottom is almost entirely smooth rocks and very slippery. The soles of the Canyoneers are made of the same kind of rubber used in rock climbing shoes and are designed to grip the rocks. They come with neoprene booties for warmth. They worked great and I highly recommend them. Good shoes like the Canyoneers and a hiking staff are a must for safety. You can do it in sandals but the risk of falling is much greater and your progress will be slowed.

The river depth is always changing as deep pools fill in and new ones are created by the river. Don鈥檛 let waist or chest deep water stop you from going up. The water is murky so you can鈥檛 see the bottom in the deeper stretches of the river. If you are uncertain about the depth, send one hiker out to scout the shallowest route. Deep pools are few and far between so they aren鈥檛 really a concern. You can do without the waterproof backpack by carrying your pack overhead if you run into deep water. However, if you fall, I hope your camera is in a plastic bag.

I agree with Cipher鈥檚 recommendation that you also do Angel鈥檚 Landing if possible. Have a great trip and stay safe.|||It's more shaded, since the canyon is steeper there and since the trail to the narrows has trees. Avoid noon time, the sun is shining directly into the canyon then. The water keeps the temperature cooler than on the other trails.
