We're going to a wedding in Las Vegas on May 1st, and think we want to vacation somewhere in drivable distance. We have a 4 year old and a 1.5 year old. My husband objects to Disney because we have always tried to avoid commercialism with our kids. Really, they've never seen a single Disney movie. But I think at least it's a place specially designed with young kids in mind. It would be Zion hands down but I'm intimidated by camping with such young kids. I'm also worried that it may still be too cold at night in May.
What do you think?|||Have you thought about having a vacation in Vegas ? My kids love it. The pool at the Flamingo is great for kids, they love travelling on the monorail, Circus Circus, Excalibur and Luxor are all places they enjoy as well as the pirate ship show outside Treasure Island and the fake volcano outside the Mirage. Lake mead and the Hoover Dam are close by and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon makes a great overnight adventure.|||Well they are not old enough to participate in any of the Ranger kid activities at Zion and it may well still be cold in May for camping. Perhaps there is a hotel near enough that you could stay in a hotel and just day trip into a part of Zion?
Camping with little kids is unique - I have done it but tough weather can really be a deal breaker. Most times they just liked hanging around and playing with sticks and throwing rocks in water - which you can do anywhere.
You would need a lot of camping gear and heavy rated sleeping bags if you were camping - if you are flying into Vegas - you would have a lot of luggage to deal with. I'm assuming that you are flying in because otherwise you might have said that you would stop along the way or back. If you are driving anyway - I think that choosing something on a smaller scale might be a better choice.|||As a person that boycotts anything Disney (to me it is not "the happiest place on earth", but more of the world's biggest tourist trap), and as a nature lover, I would go with Zion. You can also go to Joshua Tree National park right outside of Palm Springs, California. It is a huge park in the desert and at that time of year the temps are in the 70's and perfect. it is also an easier drive from Vegas than Disney is.|||I'd pick Zion National Park over Disneyland any day! Disneyland is as commercial as it gets. It's also over-priced and over-hyped as a tourist attraction. Zion National Park has such great scenic beauty, you won't be disappointed. You don't have to go camping. You can stay at a hotel in St. George, Utah, which is only about a half-hour drive away (that's where I stayed in Utah). You can also visit Bryce Canyon while you're in Southern Utah. Both are very beautiful state parks.
Here is a link on Bryce Canyon:

I'm having a "research your question " problem w/YA so I can't get Zion temps instead I'm going to give you April and May GCNP average maximum and minimum temps and since you know that in that part of the world temps are consistent with altitude you can figure out what Zion's temps @ 4000' will be
April
South Rim 7000' avg max 60 >>avg min 32 >>precip 0.93
Inner Gorge 2400' avg max82>avg min56>>precip.0.47
May
South Rim avg max 70 >>avg min 39>>precip.0.66
Inner Gorge avg max 92 >.avg min 63>>precip 0.36
Enjoy Zion

FYI
There are 2 REI stores in the Las Vegas area and if you're a member then renting camping gear is really cheap|||I think your kids are too young to enjoy Disneyland, so I'd choose Zion if that's the choice you have. You can check the NPS website for info on Zion and you should be able to find out what the average nighttime temperature is in May.|||Normally I'd pick Zion, but your kids might be too young to appreciate the park, they would enjoy Disneyland more. This is a tough call but I'm going for Disney.|||Disney Hong Kong, the newest Disney. Check www.DiscoverHongKong.com and enjoy!
