I am planning on going on a trip in may to places like the Grand Canyon, Zion National park, Death Valley, etc. To get to our first destination, the group is traveling, by plane, to Las Vegas (From Detroit). When my dad found out we were flying and not driving, he flipped out. I have never been flying, but he hates it, but now he trust flying even less due to 9/11 and emergency landing in the Hudson River.

He claims that the facts about air travel being less likely to die compared to driving is BS because there are more cars on the road then planes in the sky. He also says that if your car breaks down, you can call for a tow, but if a plane breaks down, gravity takes over.

I want to tell him, "well if that plane crashes and I'm on and I die, then I am meant to die. If you keep me off the plane God will find another way to kill me." but obviously tha sounds too harsh.
Help :}|||You can always tell him that in driving, you'll have 1 day and 8 hours to get in an accident (thats how long the drive is), and if you fly, there is only 2 hours you will have to get into a problem (how long the flight is).

With flying, pilots are professional and have extensive training. Basically, any person can drive, and that already makes flying safer.

Good luck!|||well the truth is, planes are MUCH safer than cars. It's also faster to get there. I've done the same trip and I don't know about expenses but getting a rental car there is cheaper than just about anywhere else (Due to casinos). I don't think you need t worry as much about the risk as you do about expenses. If you live in fear your whole life, you wont do anything fun.
