Is grand canyon west and the Hualapai indian reservation and tours a good option for seeing the Canyon? Or is it just better to go to the national park and stay there? Another question; we have three days, and then will be in Las Vegas. Should we spend our time in Grand Canyon or shorten our time there and go to Zion National Park as well?|||You probably won't have time to go to Zion. It is a pretty long ride from the Grand Canyon. At least 3 1/2 hours each way. With three days, going to the National Park is most likely better, there are tours there and a lot of stops if you take the shuttle from the main road.|||Do you mean that you have three days total to spend at the canyon?
If you are going to the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park than Zion is just a little of the main route from Vegas to the Park so you could easily make a stop there on the way. The North Rim is less developed than the South Rim (only one lodge) and has fewer overlooks and attractions (the free shuttle mentioned by the poster above is on the South Rim only). The North Rim is less crowded and more peaceful, but unless you are into serious hiking or a lot of vegging, you probably don't need more than a day there to get a full experience. That would leave you plenty of time for a stop at Zion on the way to Vegas.
Zion is an excellent park - not as vast or on as grand a scale as the canyon - but very pretty and scenic on a more personal scale. It is one of my favorite parks.
If you end up going to the South Rim of the National Park then Zion would be out of your way (unless you want to do a completely loop around the canyon via Lees Ferry). The South Rim has more overlooks, historic buildings and attractions, so you could easily spend a couple days there (even without serious hiking) and there are a lot of other interesting attractions in the area (Sunset Crater, Wupatki, Flagstaff).
Drive time wise... it takes about four and a half hours to get from Vegas to either the North or South Rim... typically a little longer for the South Rim, a little less for the North Rim.
Note that if you want to stay at one of the lodges in the park (especially the North Rim), you should make reservations as soon as possible (see link below). Also note that the lodge, store, ranger station and other facilities at the North Rim are only open from mid-May to mid-October.
Which ever side of the canyon you chose, I would definitely recommend going to the National Park (North or South Rim) and spending a night or two there at one of the lodges. Grand Canyon West is located far downstream of the national park (just upstream from where it empties into Lake Mead). While the canyon is still big and impressive there, it is no where near as big, deep or has the complex formations and spires as in the park (which is where all the famous paintings and photos are done). Moreover, GC West is expensive ($80 per person if you want to go on the glass skywalk) and there is no hiking or free roaming around (there are only two overlooks). While some people do enjoy their trip to GC West, quite a few visitors have gone away disappointed (check out some of the reviews on TripAdvisor).
