Uplift caused the area to be lifted more than 10 000 feet higher than where the sediments were initially deposited. This extra slope cause the water flowing over the rock to travel faster and cut deep ridges and valleys through the sandstone. Lava flows and cinder cones also played a part in the later formation of Zion Canyon.
